Help provide food and shelter for a homeless refugee family
Bateau Bay, New South Wales, Australia
Habiba has been a refugee since she was 4 years old, when her parents fled war and the genocide of Shia Muslims in Afghanistan and sought shelter in Iran. It took 16 years before the family was finally registered with UNHCR in Iran in 2001. Habiba married Mohammad, a fellow Afghan refugee, when she was just 19, and together they had 4 children. As refugees in Iran they faced discrimination and a lack of freedom and rights. In 2017 Mohammed was arrested in the street on his way home from work and deported back to Afghanistan. He planned to bring his family from Iran but the Taliban continued its murderous rampage, targeting Shia Muslims for persecution and genocide. Mohammed narrowly escaped death when travelling with his cousin in search of jobs, but his cousin was shot and killed. The following day Mohammed fled the country and eventually reunited with Habiba and their children in Malaysia, before risking the dangerous boat trip to Indonesia. They believed that they could get resettlement to a safe country through the UNHCR humanitarian program in Indonesia. Instead, they have been stranded for five years without the right to work and support their family and without their basic human rights.
Due to the pandemic they are now cut off from family support, so that without any help from IOM, they have become homeless. Thirty-nine year old Habiba, her husband Mohammad Rafi and their four children – 3 daughters and one son – have been sleeping on the streets of Jakarta in front of UNHCR amid increasing surges of Covid-19.
Like many refugees in Indonesia they get no support from IOM. They get a minimal support payment from a charity every few months but it does not come close to covering the food for a family of six, or the medical expenses. They are barely able to eat one meal a day.
The children speak good English and have dreams of higher education, but it’s difficult to even go to a school run by refugees when you are living on the streets. Apart from the physical risks of sleeping in the open without protection, especially for Habiba and her daughters, Covid-19 cases have surged 50% in the past week in Jakarta!
The situation for this family is completely unsafe, so some of our refugee friends have found them a house in a safer area outside of Jakarta and are asking us for help. The family needs money for rent, food, medical needs, and some used or cheap furniture. We are hoping to raise $2,500 to get them through the next 12 months with a small measure of security.
Please share, tell your friends about this family, and help if you can. No gift is too small and all will be greatly appreciated ?
